Alexandroupolis is the capital city of the Evros reginal unit in Thrace. With a population of almost 70.000 inhabitants and modern infrastructure, the today's city does not resemble at all the Dede Agats, the small village of the Ottoman Empire. The advantage of the location was seen in the late 19th century. The harbor became bigger and the famous lighthouse first opened on June 1, 1880. The development of the city by then, as the commercial and industrial activities increased, added to the port rail, airport and a European motorway (Egnatia Odos).
